Cost guide

How much should a small business website cost in Australia?

The useful answer is not one number. Cost depends on who plans the site, how much content and functionality it needs, who operates it after launch and whether pricing is upfront, monthly or both.

The main website cost models

A traditional project may charge an upfront design and development fee, followed by separate hosting, maintenance and future change costs. A do-it-yourself builder can reduce professional labour but leaves planning, design, content and operation with the business. A managed hosted service combines those responsibilities into an ongoing price.

What to compare in a quote

  • Planning, information architecture and page design
  • Writing, photography and content entry
  • Hosting, security updates, backups and monitoring
  • Forms, bookings, payments and other integrations
  • Domain registration and third-party subscriptions
  • Support, changes and ownership or export arrangements

Why a low starting price can be viable

A static, low-traffic business website can use very little cloud infrastructure. Reusable platform capabilities and automated publishing reduce repetitive setup work. That lets an eligible basic website begin at AUD 5 per month, while sites with more usage or active features pay more.

The important qualification is transparency: the provider should explain what is eligible, what can increase the price and which external charges are separate before activation.

Choosing the right approach

Choose based on the value and responsibility you need, not only the first invoice. A good arrangement should leave you with a site that explains the business clearly, works on mobile, can be updated and has someone accountable for keeping it operational.
